At our two week check-up for Avery, I mentioned to our pediatrician that she was gassy and got fussy at night. He said his wife read an article about swinging with the baby and making this low pitched "whoosh" sound. I disregarded it, until my husband brought it out of the vault two nights ago. I was at my whit's end, sat the baby down, and defeatedly said, "There's absolutely nothing I can do." He picked her up, swung with her and started the whoosh.
Holy moly. It. worked. It WORKS! I've tried the swing without the whoosh. I've tried the whoosh without the swing. It takes two to tango. The girl gets sleepy-eyed and is out in a matter of minutes. Thank you Major Weatherwax!!!!
I've started experimenting with the swing. I can actually hold her with my arms extended, her swaddled up, and swing her like a kettlebell. It's a modified swing, but I can get my hips fully extended. I just can't get my upper body fully upright.
This is great! Now I don't have to pop out a boob (we don't do pacifiers), I don't have to strap her in the front pouch and walk for miles (which is what was working best before we re-discovered the peds suggestion), and I don't have to be the only one that can console her (unlike with Connor). We don't have to worry about not having the sound maker or swing when we travel or whatever. It can be done anywhere by anyone. Woo-hoo. SO liberating! I don't get stressed out just thinking about the end of the day now. Plus I get in an extra few workouts!
Let me tell you, we've tried everything: gripe water, tum-ease, the windi, tummy massage, warm tummy wrap, bicycling her legs, holding her in the frog squat, I eliminated dairy, (I already don't eat other common supposed causes such as soy and wheat), I'd nurse her, I tried smaller more frequent feeding sessions for her, I'd change location, I'd walk outside, I'd walk inside, I tried the vibrating baby seat, bouncing, swaddling, swaying, "shush"ing, Keeping her awake, keeping her asleep....I read blogs, message boards, every book in our library on the subject. Nothing. None of it worked...until the swing and swoosh. I'll have to post a video. It's nearly unbelievable.
Anyone you know that's pregnant or has a fussy babe, you HAVE to share this with them! Tell them they can't be shy about the "whoosh" sound. And don't be a sissy about the swing. Swaddle them and get a firm hold. life. changer. Seriously.

Both of those things are techniques addressed in the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD that we borrowed from our pediatrician on base. Anna would get fussy, and we'd break out the 5 S's...silence, calm baby, happy parents. Loved it!
